Meet Ben

Ben MacLeod is Lead Developer in the SQUAWKBOX team. He's best known around the office for a love of Google and his ensuring collection of Android themed shirts, mugs and tops. Ben plays bass guitar in his band, Peter Dickybird and in a few others. When he was a youngster, he dreamt of becoming a rock star and is well on his way to becoming known as one around the office.

A Day In The Life Of A Software Engineer

Aside from the fact that it’s positively encouraged to work while listening to music, one of the things I like most about being a software engineer is the chance to engineer how we work as well as the product we work on. Building software is about managing a lot of complicated and sometimes contradictory forces. We need to improve existing features, add new ones, fix issues and maintain and improve our infrastructure. We need to be always trying to work on the most important and obvious of these tasks first while continuing to make overall improvements to the product and not neglecting the less obvious or visible things. We need to accomplish these tasks in a timely way, staying motivated and on track as far as possible and letting our customers and our colleagues know what they need to know about what we’re doing and how we’re going. We need to let them know no more than this, but no less, and at the time when they need to know.
